Murmur #1 is from a series of images the artist did of swarms of starlings massing over the city of Rome. A phenomenon know as a murmuration of starlings. The image, although photographic, resembles a pointillist drawing with each bird delineated in the particular.
Richard Barnes photographs are included in many public and private collections including the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Boston Museum of Art, the Hirshhorn Museum, the Los Angeles Museum of Art and San Francisco MoMa. His work is exhibited internationally with current group exhibitions in Copenhagen, DK and Chicago, IL. He has been the recipient of numerous awards and residencies including the Rome Prize, a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship and the Sidman Fellowship for the Arts at the University of Michigan. His monograph “Animal Logic” was published in 2009 to positive critical reviews.
